JESS schools are equipped with state-of-the-art technology including powerful servers, wired and wireless RM CC3 networks and more than 490 desktop and laptop computers. Every teaching room is equipped with an interactive whiteboard, projector, internet access and sound system and at least one computer. Both primary schools are equipped with an ICT lab and a mobile ICT lab which allow full class access.  In the Secondary school we have four computer labs, one of which is dedicated to music technology. Staff receive regular professional development to continually improve their ICT competence and in-service training is geared towards delivering enhanced learning and teaching through the use of e-technologies.

E-mail (Communication)
E-mail access is provided to all staff and students at JESS.

The Internet
Internet access is provided for all students. All internet access is recorded and reviewed daily.

VLE – Virtual Learning Environment (Kaleidos)
This is under development and is being used successfully by a number of departments.

Network Policies

Data Integrity and Security
All students are provided with a network account which is protected by a password known only to them. All users are required to save school data to the network, as network files are backed-up on a daily basis.

The School IT AUP (Acceptable Use Policy) & Network Monitoring Software
All students are asked to sign the IT AUP. Student activity on the network in Secondary is monitored by software called Zenguard and Ishield. Violations are dealt with by the ICT staff.

Virus protection software
JESS schools has anti-virus software which automatically checks for viruses on external devices ‘plugged’ into the network. Staff and students are asked to be vigilant when transferring information between home and school and it is an expectation that home computers used for school work have up-to-date anti-virus software installed.

ICT Support
JESS have an ICT support team of three who: 
  • Maintain and update all hardware and software on site at JESS. This includes all desktop PCs, school supplied laptops, servers, printers and communications equipment.
       
  • Configure and maintain various software packages and server software

 

Network Access Times

The JESS network is available to students within school hours (8am to 3pm).


Printing
At present, there is no restriction on printing for students. However, students and staff are asked to act responsibly and only print when necessary. It is intended that printing quotas may be set up for students in the future to monitor printing.
 

Health and Safety
Students are taught about the importance of health and safety when using computers. They are also reminded of the risks (RSI, etc) during ICT lessons throughout their time at JESS.
