Sixth Formers help local labourers

Monday, March 15, 2010

As part of their IB Diploma, several students from the JESS Sixth Form are helping to distribute desperately needed food and clothing to workers in labour camps in the local area.
Working with Faisal Khan of Take My Junk (a local non-profit organisation established to alleviate the miserable conditions of the labourers) these students are currently spending some of their spare time distributing bags of rice and second-hand clothing to labour camps.
Mr Khan set up this organisation with the idea of collecting unwanted items (ranging from furniture to canned goods, from children’s toys to DVD players) from homes in Dubai. These items are carefully sorted into two categories: those that are of use to the workers in the labour camps and those that are not. The latter are then sold at regular intervals and the money is used to purchase bags of rice and other basic foodstuffs. The food and the items that may be of use to the workers (particularly clothing and bedding) are then driven to one of the many labour camps that are scattered around Ajman and Sharjah. The harsh conditions in which these men are living have proved eye-opening for our students and their involvement in this project gives them a life experience that cannot be learnt in school.
