At Jumeirah English Speaking School (JESS) we follow the National Curriculum for England and Wales and the academic year runs from September to June; however children can be admitted during the academic year if a place becomes available subject to KHDA guidelines.*
- Fluency in English
All children admitted into Jumeirah English Speaking School must be
fluent in English and able to access all areas of the curriculum through the medium of English. For further detail on our language requirements and advice on how to prepare your child for the JESS teaching environment please read the following attachment. We would particularly encourage parents of children for whom English is not their first language, to read this document.

JESS - Language Entry Requirements
Admissions are also subject to criteria which will vary according to the child’s age group, as follows:
- Foundation, Primary and Secondary
Reports from previous schools / nurseries will be assessed by the academic teaching staff and if deemed necessary, may be followed by an assessment or interview.
- Sixth Form (International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme – IBDP)
Like most pre-university courses offered by other schools, students wishing to undertake the IB at JESS will need to have achieved a minimum standard in their GCSEs or equivalent in order to take the Diploma.
The JESS admissions requirements for students applying from outside JESS are:
* A proven track record of academic success.
* Participation in wider school life throughout their secondary schooling.
* Minimum Grade Bs at GCSE or equivalent for all subjects studied in the IBDP.
* Grade B must also be achieved in English and Mathematics.
*JESS strictly follows the KHDA regulations regarding admission of children and parents should be advised that this does include some time constraints for children entering the English National Curriculum from a different system. Please see the section When is an Offer Made? within this guide for current KHDA date restrictions.
If your child has been following anything other than the Curriculum for England and Wales, in most cases we can only offer the academic year which would follow the child’s current one (i.e. Grade 2 to Year 3). Please note this does not always result in the appropriate year being offered according to the child’s date of birth. In such cases the school may assess the applicants to determine the appropriate year group. In the event that your child has been studying in another curriculum and you wish to register with JESS, we request that you contact the Parent Relations Team for more detailed information prior to registering your child.
