The Music Department gives all children the opportunity to gain confidence, skills and a love of music and gives our children many opportunities for curriculum enrichment.
Curriculum
All primary children have at least one hour of Music per week in which they sing, play, compose, listen and dance!
At Foundation level they have two separate lessons of half an hour in which they explore sounds imaginatively, and learn to keep a beat and sing in tune.
In Key Stage One the children develop skills on the pitched percussion and recorder and start to learn to read music. They listen to music from different times and countries and create sound pieces from poems, stories and pictures. They learn to sing in parts and they perform an annual musical in costume.
In Key Stage Two the children receive their music hour in one block. The children continue the recorder but are introduced to the keyboard and are encouraged to develop any other instrumental skill they may gain in individual lessons within the class band. They learn to distinguish all the different musical elements in a range of musical styles and they learn to compose their own music using these skills. Key Stage Two children all perform in the Festive Concert and also have the opportunity to participate in a full musical production in costume.
ICT in the Music Curriculum
ICT plays an important part in the music curriculum and children in the primary school use music technology for listening, creating and for recording their work. Software packages such as GarageBand, Sibelius and Groovy Music are used in the classroom. The school recording studio is also used to record class performances and compositions.
Activities
The school choir has 120 singers which meet weekly to rehearse for concerts and productions. They sing in unison, 2 and three parts. Brass, String and Wind Ensembles form the components of the school band . Year recorder groups meet weekly to provide extension work for the better players.
