It is important for the students to develop a sense of responsibility for their actions and rewards and sanctions will be used to encourage them in this.

The reward system within the new school is developing and taking into account the needs of the maturing student.

In keeping with normal school practice, detentions will be given as a punishment for a number of reasons. If a student is to be detained during the lunch break an appropriate amount of time will be allowed for the student to take refreshment. On occasions, if the misdemeanour is deemed sufficiently serious or is a repeat of a previous incident, an after school detention will be given.

If these punishments fail to produce the desired effect on the student a Headteacher’s Detention will be given. If a student is placed in this detention, the incident is a serious matter and will be dealt with by the Head of Year or the Headteacher himself. The Headteacher’s Detention may also take place on a Saturday morning.

Any detention after school will result in a formal letter being sent to parents giving adequate notice further setting out the date, time and reason for the detention.

The following misdemeanours carry an automatic lunch-time detention:

  • the throwing of water or food
  • uniform violation

    Student Monitoring.

We will be proactive in encouraging students into positive attitudes and will use the following staged monitoring system to either build self-esteem or reinforce our expectations.

Stage 1- Form Tutor/Student Targeted Report.
Negotiation between student and tutor resulting in a set of targets specifically for that student. Daily feedback.

Stage 2 – Head of Year/Student Targeted Report
Following a case conference and parental interview, a targeted report and contract is negotiated. Weekly feedback to parents, daily feedback to students.

    Stage 3 – Assistant Head/Student Targeted Report
A daily feedback report to parents, student and Assistant Head.

Being monitored means that a student’s performance, achievement and/or attitude will be observed more closely by the teachers for a specified period of time. This record will also be seen and reviewed with the student by the Form Tutor and  Head of Year, Headteacher or Assistant Headteacher at the end of each day. The report will also be taken home for the student's parents' review and signature. When a student is placed on monitoring the report will also be used to identify positive effort and achievement.
