All students are expected to conform to the School’s code of dress and wear their uniform appropriately and, ideally, with pride. Parents are an important part of our corporate approach to this and are asked to support the School fully in the implementation of the dress code.

JESS adopts a respectful approach to religious differences, for example, Muslim girls may wear long sleeves and/or head covering if deemed appropriate. Please consult the school over this.

If the student’s uniform is incorrect and the Form Tutor has not been advised of the reason for this via a letter, phone call or a note in the Student Planner, the student’s parents will be contacted by the Form Tutor. If the dress code is persistently not adhered to and/or the uniform is continuously worn in an untidy manner, the student will be brought to the attention of the Head of Year, who will contact the parents and invite them into school to discuss the matter further.

Students need to be aware that our expectations are the same when they are wearing their uniform outside school. Parents are asked to ensure that their son or daughter meets these expectations.

The school uniform suppliers will adhere to the School's uniform requirements and are not empowered to deviate from the specifics

Shoes

  • Please note that ballerina style pumps are not acceptable.

Jewellery

  • Girls are permitted to wear one watch and one pair of stud earrings or small sleepers.
  • Boys are permitted to wear one watch only.
  • Jewellery that is religiously significant may only be worn after permission has been granted following a written request and discussion between the parents and Headteacher.
  • Watches should not be excessively expensive and should be put into safe-keeping, as advised by their teachers during the PE lessons. The PE department cannot be held responsible for losses.
  • If a student deviates from the dress code they will be reminded of the School rules.
  • Further infringement of, for example, the jewellery code, will result in the item being confiscated until the end of term.
  • Boys are not permitted to wear earrings. If they do pierce their ears during term time, they will be asked to remove the earrings.
  • Facial piercing is not permitted.

Hair

  • Unless their religion specifies otherwise, all students are expected to keep their hair tidy and refrain from extreme hair styles. Shaving all or part of the head is not permitted and boys’ hair should not be shorter than a number 2 cut and should not be below the collar.
  • Girls with shoulder length or longer hair should keep it tied back.
  • A navy blue or black hair band may be worn to keep hair tidy. Other colours are not acceptable.
  • Students are not allowed to dye their hair and if they do so, will be asked to rectify it before returning to school.
  • The Headteacher may suspend a student for an extreme haircut or colour.

Shaving

  • Boys are to be clean shaven unless their religion specifies otherwise, in which case parents should send a letter informing the Headteacher.

Make Up

  • Make up and coloured nail varnish are not permitted.

Valuables

  • Students are not allowed to bring items such as iPods, MP3 players, CD players or radios into school. If there is a need to bring a valuable item or large sum of money into school, such items should be handed into Reception for safekeeping. The School will not accept responsibility for items that have not been handed in for safekeeping.
  • Students are allowed to bring in mobile phones as long as the Mobile Phone Etiquette is adhered to.
  • Students will be provided with lockers and should keep their books and PE kit safe in the lockers. If bags or files are left on top of lockers or around the corridors, the School will not accept responsibility for these items if they go missing.
  • We are in the process of reviewing our lost property procedures and will advise the students on this when they arrive in September.
  • Parents should ensure that all personal items are clearly marked.
