Success in Maths competitions

Monday, April 25, 2011

During the past month JESS mathematicians have blazed new trails in the world of regional and International mathematical competitions.

On 2nd April five of our Year 11 and 12 students were invited to the University of Wollongong to participate in their annual Mathalon. This comprised a 1 hour individual written paper containing seriously challenging questions on algebra and trigonometry. Our students Sara Madbouli, Layla El Dabbagh, Akshay Aveera, Ethan Afework and Omar Madbouli, acquitted themselves admirably and are looking forward to next year’s challenge.

A report of the day’s events can be found here.

Only 1 week later an intrepid team of three students flew to Basel, Switzerland, to compete in an International Mathematics Olympiad. Abdulkareem Mirza, Cormac O’Neil and Euan McAinsh were the JESS pioneers and enjoyed an excellent team competition. The event comprised ten challenging rounds designed to stretch the best minds in Europe and North Africa. We were the furthest travelling team by some distance and this was warmly praised by the organisers and the other teams.

Our JESS team managed to make the top twenty, finishing 19th out of 52 teams. Many of the other schools have been participating in this competition for several years and have lots of experience to draw on, so our first efforts are a real achievement.

We look forward to entering future teams at all three age level Olympiads and will be flying off to Milan and The Hague next year.

Many thanks to the students for excellent performances and attitude and to parents for your continued support.
