Department Aims
Every student can achieve success in mathematics.
The Mathematics Department aims to provide every student with the opportunity to achieve his or her best at every level of mathematics throughout their school life. Success can be measured in different ways: from level 7 at IB Higher Level to attaining a C pass at GCSE; from explaining in detail the finer points of trigonometry in 3 dimensions to standing up in front of the class in Year 7 and offering an explanation on a directed numbers question.
Throughout their mathematical education all students will be engaged in activities that develop their JESS learner profile. The Mathematics Department encourages all students to become effective inquirers, thinkers, and communicators, also helping them to become reflective risk-takers. We aim to set challenging but achievable targets for all students at all levels. The ultimate target is to promote independent student learning. Absolutely crucial to the success of these aims is the creation of a positive learning environment, in which students are able to take controlled risks in their attempt to improve their understanding.
Department Facilities
The Mathematics Department is located in fully resourced, dedicated rooms which are all equipped with interactive whiteboards and a bank of wireless student laptops. All teachers make full use of the extensive ICT facilities when teaching, using up-to date software and web sites such as Mathletics, MyMaths, Supermathsworld and Mathsalive. In addition, students are able to access a wide range of kinaesthetic resources to further develop their understanding of new concepts.
