In Design & Technology Year 8 students last year (2010-11)designed and made wooden framed mirrors for their first project of the year. The aptly named ‘Jumirror Project’ which was steered by the JPG, ran throughout the first term, culminating in the sale of the mirrors at the Spring Fair in February 2011. All proceeds were later donated to a Sri Lankan nuesery school - a charity collectively selected by Year 8 through an internet-based vote. The project, the first of its type from Design & Technology, was the forerunner for other such projects aimed at benefitting the wider community.
An overview of the different phases of the project and photos of the students at work on the project are shown here.
Phase 1

Phase 1 involved students studying the Design Brief issued by the JPG in assembly, producing design ideas and then developing a final proposal for their mirrors.
Phase 2

Phase 2 involved students planning their mirror production before cutting the pine to length and creating their chosen wood joint, as demonstrated by their teachers.

Phases 3 & 4
Phase 3 & 4 required the students to first assemble, then sand and stain, their mirror frames before the cutting and fitting of the mirrored acrylic. Some students chose to further enhance their designs with coloured acrylic, which was cut to shape with the aid of the laser cutter. All the mirrors produced were unique and of the highest quality and every single one was sold at the fair! During the summer Miss Aitken and Mrs Bentley went to the Jar Jums nursery school in Sri Lanka, taking with them money raised. This was used to purchase lots of educational equipment and resources to help the children learn English.
