Students at JESS Arabian Ranches have two Design and Technology examination courses to choose from in Year 10. Both are offered through the UK based Edexcel examination board.

Graphic Products
This course will build upon the ADT/Graphics course followed by all students in Key Stage 3. It is particularly suited to students who enjoy designing and making and who are confident in a practical, design based environment. Use of computer aided design and manufacture will be encouraged wherever possible, but will be taught as one of several methods of production. Throughout Year 10 students will complete ‘design and make’ tasks, in preparation for their major project in Year 11. The major project can be of the student’s own choice, and is expected to encompass the designing and making mock up of a usable and useful product. This project will comprise of an A3 design folder and a realisation of the designed artefact. Key Stage 4 major projects could include:

• Design and make promotional material for a local charity
• Design and make a point of sale display for a new DVD
• Design and make the packaging for a range of fast food products

Resistant Materials
This course will build upon the Design and Technology course followed by all students in KS3. It is particularly suited to students who enjoy designing and making and who are confident in a practical, design based environment. Use of computer aided design and manufacture will be encouraged wherever possible, but will be taught as one of several methods of production. Throughout Y10 students will complete ‘design and make’ tasks, in preparation for their major project in Y11. The major project can be of the student’s own choice, and is expected to encompass the designing and making of a usable and useful product. This project will comprise of an A3 design folder and a realisation of the designed artefact. KS4 major projects could include:

• Design and make a range an adjustable light for use in a young teenage bedroom
• Design and make a storage system for use in a primary school classroom
• Design and make a combined storage unit and seat for a home office

Design & Technology Resistant Materials 2RM01:
