The English Department seeks to develop in our students the ability to express themselves confidently, to think logically and imaginatively, and to attain a deep understanding of literature. The course is designed to promote very high levels of competence in students' command of the three skills areas of reading, writing and speaking and listening. As a result of their exploration of a wide variety of texts, which are taken from a range of media, our students develop a critical understanding of how meaning is shaped both in texts from the English literary heritage, and in those from alternative cultures. Through a wide range of teaching and learning styles, the English Department fosters an inventive, creative approach to developing ideas, making connections and finding solutions. Challenging and enjoyable lessons give our students the opportunity to employ a range of communicative skills and strategies, which will support their cross-curricular achievement and provide an excellent skills base for lifelong learning.
The qualities that are developed within English include a broad range of personal skills which extend outside the classroom. We seek to enable our students to become confident inquirers, able to research and evaluate information independently. While recognising the value of independent learning opportunities, the English Department also places a strong emphasis on group work, through which we aim to foster a culture of cooperative endeavour and a balanced, open-minded approach to different viewpoints. This promotes an ethos in which each student is supported in his or her learning, and feels enabled to take risks in order to move on to the next level.
In addition to their experience in the classroom, our students are encouraged to take part in extra-curricular activities that will enrich their experience of English. These might include involvement in school productions and plays, public speaking and creative writing competitions.
The English Department assesses oral and written work, with at least one formal assessment per unit, using "assessment for learning" methodology. During the course, students are encouraged to become reflective and critical learners through evaluating their own strengths and weaknesses, and setting themselves realistic, attainable targets for improvement with guidance from their English teacher.
The English Department encompasses a broad range of teaching experience, both in Dubai and the United Kingdom. Our team is committed to delivering an inspiring curriculum that ultimately develops the complex array of skills needed to become an effective communicator in the twenty-first century.
