Department Aims
The main aim of the Music Department in JESS is to provide an enjoyable and stimulating musical experience for every student in the school. We aim to develop their knowledge and potential as musicians, both personally and collaboratively and to encourage them to express ideas with confidence and competence.

Department Facilities
All secondary school music lessons take place in a beautiful purpose-built Music Centre. The Centre includes:

• A music technology room, equipped with 22 iMac computers linked to M-Audio controller keyboards
• A large multi-purpose teaching room, fully equipped with a variety of classroom instruments, including 22 Yamaha keyboards
• A GCSE/IB teaching room with balcony for open-air performances
• A spacious recital/rehearsal room
• Instrumental teaching rooms/practice rooms

A multi-track digital recording studio is currently being developed.

The department has a large selection of instruments for students to use.

Ensembles
Music is most enjoyable when performed with a group of friends. A variety of ensembles meet on a weekly basis. The ensemble activities change from time to time, depending on demand, events and time of year, but currently include: 

* School Band/Orchestra
* Woodwind Ensemble
* JESS Sings
* Senior Vocal Group - Vocal Essence
* Folk Group
* Guitar Ensemble
* Flute & String Ensemble

Students also meet informally to play together. Several rock bands rehearse regularly, particularly in the time leading up to the Battle of the Bands Dubai competition and other local events.
