At JESS we welcome children with a variety of academic backgrounds and abilities. The Learning Support Programmes strive to provide a safe and secure environment for children with mild to moderate learning differences. As part of the Learning Support Programme we provide opportunities for children to explore and develop their individual gifts and talents, including projects and focus groups.

The Learning Support Team aims to provide a support system for the children to enable them to achieve their potential academically, socially and personally. They support the mainstream school staff in their role of providing optimum individualised classroom experiences for all children. The Learning Support Teams also support the parents of these children to ensure continuity throughout the children’s daily lives. The overall purpose of the department is to develop in students the learning skills necessary to access the wider curriculum, help to extend the more able and to raise each student’s confidence and self-esteem.

JESS uses a variety of formal and informal assessments to develop learning profiles for each child. If a child is identified as having a specific learning difference, individual targets will be developed through an Individual Educational Plan (IEP). Support is provided through in-class support, small group sessions and, when appropriate, 1-1 support.

Early intervention

JESS believes that recognising students’ learning differences and providing appropriate support at an early age will minimise the potential of academic delay and/ or low self esteem.
