Year 6 Dubai College Rugby 7’s Tournament

Thursday, December 01, 2011

After achieving such great success at the recent BSAK 7’s in Abu Dhabi (A team were the eventual winners knocking out the B team in the Semi-finals), both Year 6 Jumeirah rugby teams arrived at Dubai College in a confident mood, ready to hit the ground running with some tough opening fixtures.

On the whole, it was a difficult day for the B team who faced some excellent opposition, losing to eventual winners English College and Semi-finalists, Repton. Their best performance came in the opening game against JESS Ranches, a game that was played in excellent spirits with ferocious tackling from both teams. Ranches finished the game narrow winners but were made to work for every try by the tenacious Jumeirah team. Credit must go to the B team as JESS Jumeirah were the only school in the competition to field two teams, showing the strength and quality of players at the school.

Mr. Firth’s A team enjoyed a very successful day at the tournament, winning all their group games against Jebel Ali, DESS and BSAK - who they narrowly beat in the BSAK 7’s final the previous week. Finishing top of their pool, JESS now faced a tough Semi-final against Repton. Strong play from the JESS forwards including some outstanding tackles from Harry Hughes and Harvey Bullock ensured a safe passage to the final.
The tournament final was played at an outstanding pace, with both teams demonstrating a skill level well beyond their years. English College proved to be an excellent team, using strong running forwards to suck in players, creating space for their fast running backs. With English College leading 19-7 with one minute remaining, JESS scored an outstanding try, finished by Harvey Bullock, taking the score to 19-14 with time almost up! A high restart put English College under immediate pressure, forcing a knock on, the result, a 5m scrum to JESS with the referee deciding it was to be the final play. Sadly, JESS were unable to retain the scrum after a drive from the huge English College forwards and the final whistle sounded giving English College a deserved win.

Each player deserves credit for their commitment, attitude and skill, well done to everyone.
