The feature that sets the IB Diploma programme apart from other pre-university programmes is its core programme. This programme consists of TOK, CAS and the Extended Essay. These aim to encourage not only a love of learning and a desire to question but also to develop the fundamental life skills that students will need to become ethical leaders of the global society in which we live.

The Theory of Knowledge
This is an interdisciplinary course which is intended to stimulate critical reflection on knowledge and experiences gained both in and out of the classroom. It is a course which is unique to the IB, making students reflect philosophically upon the nature, purposes, strengths and limitations of knowledge particular to each subject they study. This encourages students to reflect critically about what they know and to develop habits of reflection which they then take to each subject, resulting in a deeper intellectual experience.

Creativity, Action and Service
CAS is a fundamental part of the Diploma Programme experience. The CAS requirement takes seriously the importance of life outside the academic world, aiming to achieve both the JESS and IB goals of fostering compassionate and active world citizens, which might not necessarily be achieved through academic study alone. CAS encourages students to share their energy and special talents with others; students may, for example, participate in theatre or musical productions, and sport and community service activities. Students should, through these activities, develop a greater awareness of working cooperatively with other people.

The Extended Essay
IB Diploma students are required to undertake original research and write an Extended Essay of 4,000 words maximum. The essay offers the student the opportunity to investigate a topic of special interest of their choice and to develop the independent research and writing skills that will be required at tertiary education. In fact, some universities offer credit for these essays towards a student’s final mark at degree level. Students will have to devote around 40 hours of private study and writing time to this essay. It is quite common for the Extended Essay to form the basis of university interviews.
