Group 3/4 (Transdisciplinary Subject)

Previous Knowledge
Environmental Systems is a course which is open to everyone who has an interest in current geographical and environmental issues. However, students should be able to perform
basic mathematical functions such as arithmetic, graphing and statistical analysis. As a transdisciplinary subject, Environmental Systems and Societies is designed to combine the techniques and knowledge associated with Group 4 (the Experimental Sciences) with those associated with Group 3 (Individuals and Societies).

Environmental Systems and Societies SL
Environmental Systems and Societies is a key course to help focus on the changes that are occurring on our planet. The course combines socio-economic, historical, cultural, political and scientific causes and effects whilst developing a holistic approach to the environment. This allows students to develop cross-curricular skills and see how their actions can have an impact in many different ways.

As part of the course students develop an understanding and opinion of natural and human causes of environmental change. Through investigations in their local environment students have the opportunity to examine these changes in the field and in the laboratory. They can look at both qualitative and quantitative data to support their findings. Through identification and analysis students gain a sense of place and purpose. This helps students to become aware that there needs to be a whole approach to solving any problems from grassroots up to global policies such as the Kyoto Treaty and G8 summit.

Assessment
SL only
The External Assessment consists of two written papers and is worth 80% of the final assessment.
Paper 1 consists of short answer and data-based questions.
Paper 2 consists of two sections: A, which comprises data response questions and B, in which students will be required to answer two structured essay questions.

Internal Assessment is an integral part of the course and is compulsory for all students. It enables students to demonstrate the application of their skills and knowledge. This is worth 20% of the final grade.
