Physical facilities at both JESS sites are state of the art reflecting the aims of JESS in providing a broad and balanced education for pupils. Both sites have large, well-established campuses with shaded, well-equipped playground areas, interactive whiteboards in every classroom, temperature-controlled swimming pools, air-conditioned sports halls, multi-purpose PE studios, netball courts, large sports fields, fully equipped ICT & Music departments and extremely well-resourced libraries.
The nine-acre site at Arabian Ranches also has tennis courts, a purpose-built music centre with digital recording studio, excellent science, art & DT facilities, dance and drama studios, a strength and conditioning suite, a lecture theatre and a 500-seater auditorium with outside amphitheatre.
A new, dedicated Sixth Form Centre was added to the Arabian Ranches site in 2014 which boasts a common room, a study hall with printing facilities, a kitchen-dining area and locker room – all solely for the use of our Sixth Form students, thus providing an excellent learning environment.
By far the greatest resource at JESS, however are the students and staff. We continue to recruit and retain staff of the highest calibre and this is reflected in examination results and inspection reports.
We are very fortunate to have modern, up-to-date facilities in all areas of the school and our sports facilities are no exception. As the Primary and Secondary schools share the same campus, many of the sports facilities are also shared between the two schools.
Swimming is an important part of the curriculum throughout JESS and our 25m, nine-lane shaded and temperature controlled swimming pool, complete with seating & changing facilities, is used extensively both during and outside the school day for lessons, swim squad practice and galas. In addition, the 10m x 15m temperature-controlled training pool allows the younger, less confident swimmers to learn the basics in a safe and fun environment.
Netball and Tennis Courts
Our outdoor ‘court’ area can be used either as 3 tennis or netball courts.
We are pleased to be able to boast one of the largest, grassed school sports fields in Dubai – one which is often used by visiting rugby 7s teams for practice. It can be used for either two training football pitches or one full-size match field and, as it is floodlit, is often used well into the evenings. It is also popular amongst our older students who use it at break times, together with the adjoining play area, to work off some energy!
To ensure that sports continue through the whole year, even in the very hot months, we have extensive indoor air-conditioned sports facilities, including:
A double (1000sq metre) sports hall, used for a variety of activities including netball, basketball, badminton, volleyball, trampolining and gymnastics to name but a few.
Directly off the Sports Hall, is a fully equipped gymnasium. Once students have been inducted, they can use the equipment for fitness and strength and conditioning. Students in school teams follow bespoke training plans to work on targeted areas to improve their performance.
A multi-purpose, fully equipped PE studio which enables our younger pupils to experience a wide variety of sports activities and games during their lessons, and is the venue for dance and movement classes.
Surrounding the primary school building are two dedicated play areas – one for Foundation pupils and one for the Key Stage One pupils. Adjacent to the sports field is a further play area designed for the older primary pupils. Each of these play areas provide a range of equipment and resources of the highest standard.
During the cooler weather, Secondary students can use the sports field during break; the sunken courtyard (with its tables, benches and umbrellas), or the amphitheatre area. The school canteen ‘The JESS Diner’, catered by Abela and co., also provides a variety of hot and cold meals for secondary students.
Swimming is an important part of the curriculum throughout JESS. There are two outdoor temperature-controlled swimming pools: one for use by our younger children as well as our training pool for swim squads, galas and curriculum swimming. Our training pool is a 25m, shaded and temperature controlled swimming pool, complete with changing facilities, it is used extensively both during and outside the school day for lessons, swim squad practice and galas. The pool also features Fina World Championship standard diving blocks and anti-wave lane ropes.
The learner pool is 10m x 15m and a consistent depth of 0.8m across the pool. This allows younger and less confident swimmers to develop the fundamental skills required for success in the safest possible environment.
The pools are overseen by a fully-trained lifeguard and they are totally covered by shading; spectator seating and changing rooms complete the poolside facilities.
The large tiger-turf sports field is used for games lessons, extra-curricular sports clubs and fixtures. Our outdoor pitch can be used for a variety of sports including football, rugby, rounders and cricket. The pitch also has markings for athletics and we often use the pitches often to train and prepare for athletics competitions.
The fully shaded and cushioned outdoor Netball court is used for curriculum PE and regularly hosts netball fixtures with other schools. Its versatility means that a multitude of sports from Hockey and cricket through to rugby and football are played on the surface.
